The CLP's Support To People Today
More than twenty of the people supported by the CLP live in their own homes. Some of these people share their homes with others - a partner, a friend, a lover, a boarder, while alternatively a number choose to live alone at this point in time.
The other people supported by the CLP still live at home with their families. Some have chosen this; however many only do so because the CLP doesn't have sufficient financial resources to enable them to realistically make a choice to move out.
About 20 percent of people supported by the CLP need 24 hours a day support. For these people our support includes:
- being present to offer constant guidance,
- assisting with all sorts of practical things that the person can't do for themselves (in and around home),
- help to stay healthy,
- motivation to try to do new things,
- assistance with personal care,
- the chance to learn how to do things for themselves,
- getting medical and other help when needed,
- encouragement to believe in themselves and helping others see the contribution they make,
- encouraging others to give them a chance to make a contribution, to develop relationships, to be included in the regular life of the community, to take on and retain roles that other people afford a positive status.
The majority of people being assisted by the CLP require such things as:
- help to keep spending within a budget,
- help to keep a home looking good,
- help with personal care,
- guidance and assistance to cook and/or clean,
- someone to take a real interest in them and who can help out if they are in trouble,
- reminders of important things they need to attend to,
- practical assistance to fix simple problems around their home,
- help to get out and meet new people,
- assistance to join and participate in a special interest group,
- help to nurture important relationships with both family and friends,
- encouragement to try out new things,
- assistance finding somewhere to live or someone to share with,
- an advocate who will speak out on their behalf and ensure their interests are protected,
- guidance through, and referral to, the maze of other community services where appropriate,
- extra assistance to cover for personal vulnerabilities.
The CLP works with an individual and their family to find and recruit a Support Worker whose qualities match the individual's needs.
